dead wrong. it's not the replacement of people you save money on, they are bugger all compared to the cost of the fleet, it's the higher utilization. if you get 20% more movement out of your auto fleet, that's 1 less truck in 5 that you need.
you simply shift the people from the cab to a support role in regards to work force. auto gear needs a shit load more support and setup.
Sorry Mr. Pig Iron you know that is incorrect. Just look at roll on roll off freight and what that did to transportation. Every person you get off a mine site reduces the support staff onsite. Less cleaners, less cooks less everyone. If you are working on a mine you know that. Less aircraft to fly them out to the mine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuSS2OzZ9kU Does your mine look like the one in the clip???? Peter

on costs for staff are about 30% for most miners, average truckie is on $130k, so call it $170k all in.
a large mining truck costs about 6 million once you add tyres/tray and get it to site. if i need 10 manual trucks and i get 20% more utilization with automation, that means i only need 8 trucks.
savings in capital = 12 million savings from man power = 340k
like i said, the higher utilization is where the juicy savings are. anything you save in man power is just cream on top.

yes, But as i say to people buying a new car. If you can buy just as good a car that uses less fuel to travel the same distance why wouldn't you. Ships used to have many crew. Now the largest bulk carriers have a hand full of crew. Large companies have people employed as we all know to cut costs at every turn. Less staff means less potatoes consumed onsite, less potatoes consumed onsite means less toilet paper used. We all know the drill. Cut costs and improve returns to shareholders. U.S. military now have a huge fleet of drones, no pilots. Peter from Mount Lawley And for every truckie we both know there is another truckie sleeping and another 2 on shift rotation in Perth. So lets do the full math. Would you say $800,000.00 for every truckies bum hugging seat in the operation? How many trukies bums rotate through that trucks seat in a year?? No seat = no truckies bums. = $x savings per year, if x = or is less than keeping truckie then it's bye bye truckie. = less potatoes and toilet paper. It all add's up to = 0 truckies.

yeah whatever, i give you and example of 12 million in savings and rave on about saving a few potatoes and toilet paper.
even with 0 truckies the capital savings is where it's at. and automation won't give you 0 truckies.
