Julia Gillard puts Altona house on market

David Adams

It was the home she bought as she embarked on her federal parliamentary career in 1998 - only dreaming she would one day reside in the Prime Minister's Lodge.

Julia Gillard paid $140,000 for the modest property in the working class suburb of Altona, in Melbourne's south-west.

But earlier this week she quietly moved out, putting the home on the market, ending 15 years in the electorate.

The former Prime Minister told Fairfax Media the home “has been a happy place for Tim and I, full of light and often full of laughter”.

She loved the “seaside village” feel of the nearby shopping strip at Pier Street and the Esplanade which runs along the front of Port Phillip Bay, she said.

Anna Grech, a senior sales consultant with the Williamstown office of western suburbs agency Jas Stephens, said while the house at 9 Medford Street is expected to sell for more than $600,000, “there is obviously a bit of history attached to the house”.

“(T)here is an intangible value to the house…” she says. “What value can you put on that?”

The three-bedroom brick property on a 603 square metre block became Ms Gillard's permanent home again after Kevin Rudd's comeback in June.

But, following news in August that the former PM and Mr Mathieson had reportedly spent $1.8 million on a beachside property in Adelaide, it will be auctioned in December.

The house, which has been emptied of Ms Gillard's things but filled with hired furnishings in the lead-up to the auction, was also the setting for a photograph taken in the mid-2000s which depicted Ms Gillard sitting at her kitchen table and subsequently sparked a public discussion about her empty fruitbowl.

Here's some proof regarding my other post when I was referencing prices being $150k for house and land packages back then. 600k now apparently - well out of reach. In 15 years time will that be worth 2.5mil? :lol

Quite possibly. It will depend on how much immigration there is (probably lots) and how much Chinese money is laundered through our property market (probably lots).

Julia Gillard hopes renovations lift her above the median as she lists long-time Altona home

By Jonathan Chancellor
Thursday, 14 November 2013

Julia Gillard has listed her longtime Altona home.

The former prime minister's modest brick home on its 603 square metre block has been scheduled for December 14 auction.

Her south-west Melboune has been listed as she pursues her post-political life in her hometown, Adelaide.

Earlier this week she moved out, along with the furniture, putting the home on the market, ending 15 years in the electorate.

Jas Stephens agent Anna Grech expects the three-bedroom 1960s Medford Street home to fetch $600,000 plus.

I note her Altona house cost $140,000 in 1998 - slightly less than Altona's then $155,000 median price.

RP Data puts Altona's median currently at $545,000, thereby suggesting, on current pricing estimates, that there have been quite substantial improvements. Or she bought very well or has ambitious expectations.

It was renovated in 2008, adding an extra room, ensuite in the main bedroom, and a deck out the back.

"She loves the seaside suburb, she's moved now to a seaside suburb," Ms Grech told the local paper.

Julia Gillard's Altona open for inspection with modern fruit bowl not included in $600,000+ pricing

By Jonathan Chancellor
Saturday, 23 November 2013

Julia Gillard's longtime Altona home had its first packed open for inspection this weekend.

With queues to the pavement at 9 Medford Street Altona, it was almost like The Block renovation television series hoopla but for politico fanatics.

If they'd come to see that fruit bowl which appeared in the much-interpreted Ken Irwin Fairfax Media 2005 photo, they were left bemused as the marketing shots of the kitchen interior shows two - one empty, the other with apples - but neither the original fruit bowl.

The former prime minister's south-west Melbourne brick home on its 603 square metre block got a 2008 makeover to make it more modern than modest.

And moving forwards the stylists have recently been through the property as earlier this month she and parter, Tim Mathieson both moved out, along with their furniture, in preparation for the home going on the market.

Ending 15 years in the electorate, Julia Gillard has scheduled her auction for December 14 auction as she pursues her post-political life in her hometown, Adelaide.

(Huge interest (below) in Julia Gillard's Altona home captured from the tweeted Channel 7 cameraman coverage)

Jas Stephens agent Anna Grech expects the three-bedroom 1960s Medford Street home to fetch $600,000 plus.

Since its public listing the home has been featured across the world, from the International Business Times to the Malaysia Chronicle.

More than 5800 website views have been recorded since it was listed for sale, some eight times higher than the normal number for Altona property marketing campaigns, according to realestate.com.au.

Her Altona house cost $140,000 in 1998 - which was slightly less than Altona's then $155,000 median price.

RP Data currently puts Altona's median at $545,000, thereby suggesting, on current pricing estimates, that there have been quite substantial improvements. Or she bought very well or has ambitious expectations.

It was renovated in 2008, with new kitchen, plus adding an extra room, ensuite in the main bedroom, and a deck out the back.

"I bought my home in Altona because I loved the seaside village feel of Pier Street and the Esplanade," Ms Gillard told the local paper, The Wyndham Weekly.

"The house itself has been lovingly cared for by the first owner. Like Altona itself, our home has been renewed and modernised over the last 15 years. Nine Medford Street has been a happy place for Tim and I, full of light and often full of laughter," Ms Gillard said.
