I work in an obscure part of IT, and my experience is that the only people who can't find work are either underskilled, or dickheads. Some people struggle to find a job they'd like, but the work is there.
I'm hearing work's a bit scarce at the moment from IT people who are applying for jobs. That's in Melbourne — maybe it's different in other markets. Having said that, it looks like the guy in the article has chosen an entreprenurial career path and might not be suited to working for the man. I think you're right — demand traditionally was so strong that any dickhead could hold down a position and be paid obscene amounts for it but supply has now caught up and that game is over.

Friend I was surprised to learn recently that them fine folks in the wilds of India all have them modern computers and smart-phones, just like we do.

So it's really no wonder this has happened now, isn't it?

The next revolution will be keeping things secret though. Who wants their private banking stuff broadcast to some stranger in the wilds of India? How do they make sure it's all kept a big secret?
It's not the wilds, it's Mumbai.
Any expressed market opinion is my own and is not to be taken as financial advice

That's the future of our great country right there friends.

You will be successful if you are regarded by certain individuals who are "prestigious" computer "geeks" (well they aint doctors or lawyers now are they?) and who dictate what is "the norm" as being "ok with them" and not "dickheads".

Yes friends, I can sure see why these young folks leave with their skills and go overseas.

That's the ticket, that's the ticket! ;)
I have employed young people from Australia before (while working for larger IT companies) and they have generally worked out well.

The fact that you think all computer people are geeks indicates that you really don't know anything at all about how modern IT works.

There are plenty of people who have strong business and communications skills, who do enterprise pre-sales and engineering, and who implement governance structures, and those who do specialiast consultancies. Geeks don't typically survive in a lot of these parts of IT, because many of them have the notion that because they have strong technical skills the world needs to bow down and worship them. The reality is that the technical skills are the easiest part to replace, which is why so many such jobs are under heavy competition from outside Australia.

EDIT: Hey Billy Jack - are you actually R2M?

Friend, I understand, but you didn't get my fine point there. I don't understand how modern IT works? Well, there you go friend, I guess I don't. But you do, don't you? Because you can put everything into a box. There are "dickheads" and "non-dickheads", right? Yes friend, these are the words of a geek who don't understand how the world works. The reality is that only an aspie thinks that technical skills are easily replaced by offshoring all them secret informations offshore and thinking that its the "right thing to do" because of some management horseshit learned at management or goverrnance structure school. Heck, why not offshore everything we do that's technical and then claim that we know better because we are smart business and communications "specialists" that know it all? Yeah. that's the ticket, that's the ticket!

Who the heck is R2M? I'm Billy Jack and I am glad I don't have to work with the aspies who think that he must be "underskilled or a dickhead". What planet are you from, friend?

Yes friend. It's the place I go to for when I need delicate surgery done or need clean food to eat. I'm sure it's world standard over there these days.

That's why most of them work for companies who provide the rest of these things for them.

And I'm thinking that yes, you are indeed R2M. Explains a lot.

The problem is IT continues to evolve rapidly in Australia, it is hard to keep up. You see roles in aligning Business and IT, cloud/virtualisation specialists, mobille application development, Information security are becoming more prevelant now than it was in the past. At the end of the day, efficiency and cost control is the hot topic.

Agreed.

The days of turning the techies loose to create whatever they wanted are over.

Yes. Holding business accountable for what they use and IT accountable for SLA's is the name of the game now.

Definitely, that's why moops is such a cranky old git - developers used to be the rock stars of I.T but now are just a small part of the picture. Most of the big problems have been solved, almost all professional coding work these days is the digital equivalent of plumbing, and there are an endless army of Indians who can fulfill that role.

That's not to say that all coding work is easy - the guys that build frameworks used by other developers are fiendishly clever, but are generally badly paid as their goal is not financial remuneration but the intrinsic pleasure they get from writing code.

If you want a well paid job in I.T you need to be able understand the requirements of your customer and then translate that into a usable product. That's the bit that a lot of developers from BRIC countries struggle with, which is why they are likely to remain the I.T sweatshop for at least another generation while all the better paid roles stay in the West.
"It were not best that we should all think alike; it is difference of opinion that makes horse races." - Mark Twain on why he avoids discussing house prices over at MacroBusiness.
"Buy land, they're not making any more of it." - Georgist Land Tax proponent Mark Twain laughing in his grave at humourless idiots like skamy that continually use this quip to justify housing bubbles.

Friend, please learn some manners. I am Billy Jack, the one and only.

Aspies are aspirationals, and are you saying that Zuckerbergs, Gates, and the other computer geniuses were technicians only? I believe that any of them fine young folks out there who know the computers could own what they do if only they had the drive to do it. You see today everyone has a belly full of food, a big screen TV and as much pornos as they want on them computers they have, so they don't have the drive - ie need to make a lot of money - like many of the older folks of my generation. This is part of my theory that young folks these days could live off the smell of an oily rag, they simply don't need to make money to be happy either. So I don't believe you are right friend.
