'Immigration levels can go up': Labor leadership hopeful Bill Shorten outlines his vision on Q&A

October 1, 2013 - 1:43AM
Daniel Hurst

Australia should increase its immigration levels, Labor leadership hopeful Bill Shorten has declared, saying the next arrival could “be the next Albert Einstein or a good taxpayer”.

During an appearance on ABC TV’s Q&A program alongside fellow contender Anthony Albanese, Mr Shorten predicted his idea would trigger hate mail but insisted immigration would not send the nation backwards.

Both men also said it was time to lay the groundwork for an Australian republic and vowed to fight the Coalition’s planned axing of the Minerals Resource Rent Tax.

Mr Albanese and Mr Shorten are trying to reach out to about 40,000 Labor members, who now have a 50 per cent say in who will become the party’s new leader following the September 7 election loss.

On Monday night’s program at the ABC studios in Perth, Mr Shorten said the party needed to stop people smugglers risking lives at sea but added: “There are a lot of refugees who might not only be the next Albert Einstein or a good taxpayer.”

Speaking about immigration more broadly, Mr Shorten said Labor needed to re-state its support. Apart from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, everyone came to Australia by boat or plane, he said.

“I do believe the immigration levels can go up,” Mr Shorten said.

“No doubt tomorrow I will get the hate mail from people who say ‘You don't understand’. I do understand. Immigration has been a plus for us and we should be certainly as a party being seen to be pro-immigration and pro increasing it, making sure people go to wherever it is sustainable for infrastructure and support, but we are an immigrant country and we shouldn't ever hide from our destiny.”

Bill Shorten speaks in favour of immigration in Labor leadership debate

Leadership candidate says immigration levels can go up as he debates rival Anthony Albanese on Q&A TV programme

Bill Shorten said Australia’s immigration levels could rise, calling on Australians never to “hide from our destiny” as an immigrant country, as he made a televised pitch for the Labor leadership.

Shorten said his party had to restate support for immigration, including from skilled migrants and refugees, and acknowledge every Australian other than Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders “came on a boat or a plane”.

“We are not pulling up the ladder,” Shorten said. “I believe immigration levels can go up. We get to occupy a whole continent. No doubt I will get all the hate mail … but we are an immigrant country and we shouldn’t ever hide from our destiny.”

Is he really this ignorant, or is he just acting this way to pander to various interest groups? Our growth rate is what, 1.8%, at last count, a bit over half of it driven by immigration. Too low according to Mr Shorten. Actually by any reasonable measure this is absurdly high and will only cause problems in the long term.

He probably wanted to sound nice and high-minded on Q&A in the company of sophisticates. Any critique of immigration policy is considered racism by some of the types you would find in the audience. To call for an increase in immigration is seen as morally superior and courageous — fighting the good fight against the forces of darkness and insularity. I suspect he will conveniently take a different position when he's speaking in private to his constituents.

We won't be wealthier just because we bring in more people. Wealth per capita is what you need to focus on, you simpleton.

Our whole economic system is built on a increasing population paradigm whether you like it or not.

Wealth per capita has gone up with increasing population , so save your insults.

It's the minerals we dig out of the ground and ship off to China that's made us the wealthy country we are today. As we bring in more people, there will be less mineral wealth per person. Our wealth per capita may even decline.

Perfect reason never to vote Labour again!
After a bubble has burst, no one denies that it existed. But before it does, the popular refrain is that though bubbles existed elsewhere in the world, “there’s no bubble here”. So housing bubbles are admitted to have existed in Japan, the USA, Spain and Ireland – because they’ve already burst.

Poor old Bill suffers so badly from Relevance Deprivation Syndrome he thinks rerunning the election wil somehow get people interested in the labor party.

The moron even had the gall to say that the alp welcomes boat people :o

The only thing I want to hear from shorten etal is how they wil manage the inevitable corruption that occurs whenever the alp gains power.

No it has not. It's stayed the same.

More immigration is good for bitter old scum like you and your ips.

Shorten is a fuckwit. But at least he's honest about it, unlike the Liberals and Juliar.
