yeah right, housing is all pecking order and totally unproductive, that's why you are so desperate for a crash so you can buy one.
No interest in buying one, I like renting.

land appreciates in value because popular locations are rare and becoming rarer. houses are more expensive because they are built better and have gotten much much bigger than they were even 30 years ago with more features.
It's a good thing for velcro, or you would have trouble putting shoes on in the morning otherwise. Everything in the house has got cheaper you moron. Tiles are cheaper, cabinets are cheaper, taps and fittings are cheaper.

" Land ownership is a status symbol and an indulgence in a post-agricultural society." - this because in agrarian societies people worked as (in some cases literal) slaves in the fields. so you can't put forward in all seriousness that people should just stop wanting to own land.
I am putting it forward in all seriousness, but I wouldn't expect a semi-evolved simian like yourself to understand it, or any other of the brain damaged peasants who make up your peers.
Quote:
"If we want a more egalitarian society, then we will agree that each person of means should bear their own housing costs, but we will also, as a society, pool our resources to cover that cost for those without means" - what this really means is that people with "means" whatever that is, will end up paying for 2 or more houses which they don't get to own/profit from. queue flight of all capital. won't work even if the government tries to enforce it and our tax base isn't large enough to support it via taxation, even if the government doing the tax raising survives.
This is what happened in Australia for 50 years dimwit, and it is only the bottom 10% who need this support. But by all means make the case for people living in cages.

but enough tearing you down.
When did you start you clueless loser?
Quote:
the real challenge is not affordable housing, that can be done by building large mass housing complexes for those "without means". the challenge would be doing it in a way that stops them becoming centers for crimes and drug abuse, a virtual prison for the children that grow up in them
Oh I see, you would rather that the drug addicts and criminals be evenly distributed in every suburb. Sounds like a great plan.

Piggy! What did I tell you about leaving your derp everywhere?? Bad, bad piggy!
"It were not best that we should all think alike; it is difference of opinion that makes horse races." - Mark Twain on why he avoids discussing house prices over at MacroBusiness. "Buy land, they're not making any more of it." - Georgist Land Tax proponent Mark Twain laughing in his grave at humourless idiots like skamy that continually use this quip to justify housing bubbles.
so while complaining about government policy, you lot want the government to make more policies to fix it?
can you not see where you are going wrong here?
Without policy change, how is anything going to be fixed? As long as we have negative gearing, investors are going to keep bidding up prices and distort the market. Same with foreign investors. Same with bringing in too many immigrants with doing anything about the infrastructure.
Government policies created the bubble and are keeping the bubble inflated and heavily distorted towards favouritism of the investors over would-be homebuyers.
It's a good thing for velcro, or you would have trouble putting shoes on in the morning otherwise. Everything in the house has got cheaper you moron. Tiles are cheaper, cabinets are cheaper, taps and fittings are cheaper.
considering the increased labor costs and higher building standards it's amazing they don't cost more.

you can't answer any of the points i made so you resort to abuse as usual. it must really burn you on the inside to be constantly wrong on housing when you are so so clever.

where the fuck did i say this? oooh i didn't you just need to try steer the conversion away from the multiple own goals you keep scoring.
Can we start a thread that promotes a better housing solution than the one that is in place now. Please put up ideas. Do not make personal attacks. We could form a police paper that could be forwarded to government.
Peter from Perth Point one.
A person can only own one house. And one holiday home.

Feeling a bit unloved are ya Fruitfly?
Ya starting ta sound like Willy_Nilly. Only sillier.
Point 1: A system that crushes the Capitalist instinct doesn't work.
Point 2: A system that makes its housing (or any other necessity perhaps?) exorbitantly expensive for their youngies crushes the Capitalist instinct.
So... A whole lot of dismissing other people's ideas but nothing from you. Your character is fully on display here.
May I suggest that the reason you are so disparaging of all the comments made is that is may mess with the price of houses in general? You are such a dumb ass.
It's the big wide world here and not some student collective, so you can expect some critique when you put half-baked stuff out there.
Aside from levying a tax on empty houses, which, although I would disagree with it, actually *would* have some impact on affordability, the rest of your suggestions were either non-changes or actually counterproductive.
In the end if you want to impact affordability, you need to address (a) the cost of supply and/or (b) rents. Taxing the shit out of the people who provide housing because you don't like them is unlikely to make housing cheaper.
Of course, if you have any substantive comment on my critique in addition to this little rush of ad hominem and polemic, I'd be interested to read it.
