Property myth exposed as our journalist becomes a real estate agent in just four days

WE trust them to sell the most valuable asset we'll ever own - yet all it takes to become a real estate agent is a four-day online course.

Newcomers can even be given the keys to an open inspection and the responsibility of negotiating with buyers after just a few hours in a classroom.

This is in stark contrast to other professions. Florists need 440 hours of study to be qualified - while the average hairdresser does a year of training before being handed a pair of scissors and let near a customer.

It's a surprise to most people and why I took one of the dozens of Sydney courses, which range in cost from $400 to $800, to test how easy it is to qualify as an agent.

And the verdict? No sweat.

Although my course lasted four days, some promise to cram the basics of a multi-billion-dollar industry into a weekend.

I at least had a head start having written about property for years, but many of my 25 classmates were starting from scratch. A couple were high school students who had just turned 18. Some didn't know what a vendor was, others struggled with English and thought the Privacy Act meant an agent couldn't ask a buyer what their name was.

Often our course seemed more like a cursory introduction. We whizzed through the basics and were directed to the internet for vital information.

The commitment of the some of the other students, who included a lawyer and retail salespeople, was questionable. One continually referred to client conditioning - questionable methods of talking vendors down in price just to make a sale - and during one exercise another brought out a large wooden abacus to calculate a commission.

Classes ran from 9am to 4pm; each day specialising on a specific element of the industry and taught by different trainers.

Although there was homework allocated each day, we had two weeks from our last day of study to hand in the assignments. Once I had a tick in the "pass or fail" course, the only remaining step was to register with the Department of Fair Trading - then I was free to work with an agency to sell any home.

Frank Castle is a liar and a criminal. He will often deliberately take people out of context and use straw man arguments.
Frank finally and unintentionally gives it up and admits he got where he is, primarily via dumb luck!

I thought agents were leaving the industry in droves? Anyway, 2% commission, split 50/50 with the agency on a median priced house in Sydney, is $7000 for opening a few doors on the weekend. No wonder property is all the rage with Australians and the Irish.

Looks like I will be taking one of the weekend cram courses then. Sure beats working for a living.
