So now we have some major movement in the diplomatic front with Russia emerging as the good guys. Not only do the Russians have the second ranked global firepower they now have a leader that is saying "Nyet" to the US and its Israeli backers on the world stage and actually getting his way. Rumour has it that Russia also downed two US missiles, the launching of which was first denied by Israel, then they moved there position to is was war games only and they were not shot down.
US/Israel/Saudi 0 Rest of the World 1
No doubt the US will be at it now, busily looking for another reason to push the button.
This diplomatic option was first raised by the US over 1 year ago as a way to secure Syrian chemical weapons should the nation fall apart. No one wants chemical weapons in the hands of extremists, neither Russia or America as both are constantly attacked by them. The Russians and Syrians rejected this diplomatic option along time ago.
Now the situation has changed and the US has called the Russians bluff, the Russians panicked as the US was about to launch potentially crippling strikes against Syria and nothing Russia could do to stop it militarily. Obama holds the cards as he holds true power, when push comes to shove Russia has no answer for American military dominance.
The only reason the Russians and Syrians are agree to this now is the Americans have them by the balls, if the Syrians don't play ball they will lose a lot of key military assets in which to fight the rebels and hence perhaps lose the civil war, the Russians will lose an ally and nothing they can do about it other then to use diplomacy which is what they are now forced to do. This time though they are giving in to US demands no matter how they try to spin it for public opinion.
I don't recall any other nation in the world giving up its most prized weapons program so quickly, not even Iraq folded like this. Assad has latterly crapped his pants as he is barely hanging on now vs the Rebels with all the support of Russia, Iran and Hezbollah and he still cant beat the rebels. Throw in a US military strikes and it would be a crippling death blow.
I do hope this diplomacy works but the US is insisting that if Syria does not hand over all chemical weapons or tries to delay, trick them military force will be used.
In the end if the US and Russia can work together it will be a great win for the US. All the Russians have done is prevent an ally from being defeated and disarmed one of their own allies as they could not militarily protect them. While the US achieves its goals without firing a shot.
