Sydney, Melbourne traffic not so bad after all

October 2, 2013
David McCowen

Next time traffic has your blood boiling, pause for a moment and remember that things would be worse if you were in Istanbul.

GPS data from 50 cities has found drivers in Sydney and Melbourne fare better than those in places like Beijing, Madrid or London.

Mapping experts from TomTom compared commutes around the world, and ranked cities according to how many times the average vehicle stopped each year.

The Turkish city of Istanbul fared the worst, with drivers stopping 31,200 times a year on average, or about 85 times per day.

Mexico City and Moscow were close behind in second and third, with Australia’s two entrants well down the list in 35th and 45th place.

The average car in Sydney stops 13,200 times a year - or, surprisingly just over 36 times a day - while Melbourne drivers stop just 8,760 times per annum, which equates to approximately 24 times a day.

TomTom’s Australian congestion index lists Sydney as the worst for traffic, ahead of Perth and Melbourne. It shows Perth as having the fastest-growing congestion levels, while traffic in Brisbane is actually improving.

Rank City Average stops per year
1 Istanbul 31,200
2 Mexico City 30,480
3 Moscow 29,520
4 Beijing 28,200
5 St Petersburg 28,080
6 Rome 28,080
7 Jakarta 28,080
8 Bangkok 26,040
9 Shanghai 24,960
10 Surabaya 24,360
35 Sydney 13,200
45 Melbourne 8,760
