I don't dabble in precious metals so it doesn't make a lot of difference to me personally. But if it keeps going it can't be good news for our gold and silver mining ventures.

no it won't be good news for them. they've started chasing extremely uneconomical gold due to the gold bubble.
i wouldn't be that sad to see gold mining pull back. it's a hideously polluting process. you don't ever see the gold bugs mention that aspect to it while they are trying to claim the moral high ground vs housing.

As an afterthought, the process you refer to (I agree that it is polluting) employs significant numbers of people here in Gladstone - we have two chemical plants engaged in sodium cyanide manufacture, largely for reclaiming gold as I understand it. I think they also manufacture products used to make mining explosives.

australian gold mining isn't TOO bad. it could certainly improve, but overseas mines in poor countries are at a very low standard.

I just hope the price stays high enough to justify the operations in TV shows like "Gold Rush" and "Bering Sea Gold"!
Apart from the diesel burnt (and trees cleared in Gold Rush) these small time operations are not too polluting compared to chemical extraction operations.

small alluvial operations can have a huge impact.
it's not the diesel and trees they clear, it's the ground disturbance and their impact on water quality that's the problem. they can also expose acid producing material which ruins water ways. of course the small operators never clean up after themselves either.

The Cyanide process is not sooooooo bad, because cyanide is not a long-lasting chemical. It either kills you immediately or it doesn't hurt you.
The really worrying process is the mercury amalgam process used by the small artisanal producers who currently account for nearly 15% of global production. They are slowly poisoning themselves and all their neighbours. An estimated 300 million people worldwide are affected by this.

correct on the cyanide if it's handled correctly.
mercury and other heavy metals are still a problem for the likes of kcgm. mercury gets emitted from their roaster.

"Can"
Yes I am sure they can, especially the small timers in 3rd world countries and especially if they are using cyanide and mercury. But the alluvial small timers seem to be fairly well regulated in Alaska.
I would think that regulated small timers would have a smaller effect than regulated global corps. Because the global corps tend to influence the regulations somewhat by investing in PR and "studies".
We've all seen what the big corps can do when they are out of the reach of western regulation restrictions.

Didn't know that. How much? As much as, for example as is emitted from a coal-fired power plant?

In general they will still be better than the small operators in the same area. After all, the big corps are subject to pressure in their home countries as well as regulation in the country of operation.
