I am first born Australian. My Father is Irish and my Mother and Brother are English. My Father is from Ballingarry and Mother from St Albans
I was born in Donegal as were both my parents, but I was brought up in the UK and moved here in 1990.
I have just looked up Ballingarry its pretty central have you ever been there? St Alban's is very nice, quite an exclusive part of the UK. I think your Dad must have been a charmer to win the heart of a St Alban's girl
Definition of a doom and gloomer from 1993 The last camp is made up of the doom-and-gloomers. Their slogan is "it's the end of the world as we know it". Right now they are convinced that debt is the evil responsible for all our economic woes and must be eliminated at all cost. Many doom-and-gloomers believe that unprecedented debt levels mean that we are on the precipice of a worse crisis than the Great Depression. The doom-and-gloomers hang on the latest series of negative economic data.
He is just being a bit of a dick-flop about the market as usual

You might also want to look at Cragie and Duncraig. You get an older house, but a lot for your money. If you don't mind doing a refurb then you can make an old house look pretty good. The schools aren't too bad either. There are some nice suburbs further north, but you need to be careful. TBH I don't like the goldfish lifestyle, with neighbours living on top of each other on tiny blocks. That's not my idea of what Australia is about, but it seems to be what it's becoming.
Whenever you have an argument with someone, there comes a moment where you must ask yourself, whatever your political persuasion, 'am I the Nazi?'
If chubby = bull and "dick-flop" = bear then I guess I consider myself to have something approaching a "half mongrel" for the market
I have some difficulty estimating where I would be in that bull to bear scale I just don't seem to have the right equipment

I have never been to Ireland, my fathers parents were both gone by the time I was 6.
All my relatives on my fathers side are in the UK or Canada. My mums parents are in Australia in Coffs as is my mums brother.
I have been to England a few times backpacking/relo run.
My father was* 6 five in the old scale and I have no doubt he was a strapping lad back then. Mid 50's now and the hard life is showing on him.
*he has shrunk a bit, now 6 three or so.

Poontang, what does your old man think about the state of the Aussie property market?
He thinks Melbourne prices went up too much too quick the past 15 to 20 years or so making it too difficult for the next generation.
He also thinks there is more opportunity for those that make an effort to earn more income than those of his era.
There are some people who seem angry and continuously look for conflict. Walk away, the battle they are fighting isn't with you, it's with themselves.
The first lesson of economics is scarcity: There is not enough of anything to satisfy all who want it. The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics. ~ Thomas Sowell.
Who was the fool, who the wise man, who the beggar or the Emperor? Whether rich or poor, all are equal in death.

Ireland is great to visit and you would get a great welcome as people love Australia and all things Aussie over there, where I am from is full of lakes, bogs mountains and fantastic beaches. It is a great place for a holiday, but I am a bit biased there
My Dad was 6 3 and he was considered tall in those days -so your dad would certainly have stood out in the crowd
I have only been to Melbourne a couple of times but I have to take my hat of to a population that defied the fear of the worldwide GFC to have a boom in right the middle of a huge international recession, even if it is taking a bit of a backward turn now at least they were independent enough to ignore all the panic. - Do you have an explanation for it? Why was Melbourne so confident in the middle of the storm?

I lived in Duncraig most of my life and the schools are indeed pretty good, however it costs an arm and a leg to live there these days.
I was looking at Craigie too however its pretty close to the wastewater plant and when I have visited friends there in the past some days you can just smell it
The other thing thing was that Between Hepburn Ave and Hodges Drive will be getting the NBN soon and I work heavily in IT so this would be pretty beneficial to me.
