I've had a terrible time installing latest release Linux. They just don't seem to be compatible with this P4 era secondary computer I got. I managed to install Debian 6, but it is not user friendly and would soon collapse into black screen or mouse and key board freeze.
My guess is the current Linux kernel is not compatible with older hardware. Even the Lubuntu version which is supposed to work with older system requirements.
But backtracking to Ubantu 8, it seems to install without too much trouble and so far so good.

Last night I found a computer on a hard waste pile.

This was very interesting because although it was a Prescott P4 the MOB was 775 socket with a couple of sata2 sockets as well as eide. There was no HDD but it had probably been a sata and the owner retained it.

ASUS P5S800-VM SOCKET 775

With this MOB if it is working, I don't have the problem of finding a EIDE HDD because I can just use a cheap SATA.

Linux is just as much of a resource hog as Windows. That's another myth. That Linux is really optimised and shit.

Maybe try Damned Small Linux, or Puppy Linux which are designed to run on older computers and use less ram, or use Debian with another GUI besides GNOME or KDE, there's some lightweight ones out there, I can't remember their names though but if you ask I shall research. But that will probably just be a pain.

My centos system is using 1.2 gb of ram atm, I've hardly installed anything on it. I remember Windows Xp used about 500mb. :re:

Edit: Actually Ubuntu offers are more lightweight distribution called Xubuntu. Which might be easier than completely changing distros. Then whatever you've learned with Ubuntu might not completely go to waste.

So far the computer "Shaw-Ferrar m-2 case, an MSY build from maybe 2006..................has worked okay. I recalled that my broken DVR recorder contained a hard drive and it turn out to be a perfectly good Hitachi 160 GB EIDE.

Some interesting news about TW Rome 2.

Rome II: Total War's upgraded engine to have same minimum spec of Shogun 2

Despite featuring an impressive new graphics engine, the freshly-announced Rome II: Total War – scheduled for release in late 2013 - is aiming to run at the same minimum specification level of its 2011 predecessor Shogun 2.

"We're absolutely determined to use every ounce of power we get, and to use everything that the most powerful rigs can offer now and in a year's time," said Rome II lead designer James Russell to VideoGamer.com. "But at the same time we know people play on all sorts of machines, people play on laptops more and more, so we're determined to stay accessible to people that don't necessarily have the best new machines.

"Our objective is not to change the minimum spec for Shogun 2. We're doing everything we can to keep the game accessible, we don't want to push that minimum spec up from what it was with Shogun 2."

This focus on accessibility isn't looking to dampen the game's ability to bedazzle those with high-end PC's either, and the studio is hoping to make the already tempting game look better during the rest of its development and optimisation process. "The demo's running on a seriously big machine," says Russell.

"So though it's a monster rig, and yeah it's a brand new engine in many respects - we've got a new lighting model, we've got a new particle system, we're going to have a new sound engine as well which isn't even properly up and running yet."

"There's a lot more work to do, and it's going to look way better by the time we're done."

VideoGamer.com has also rounded up everything we've discovered in Rome II into one lengthy post.
