The old pentium 4s would run at around 80c and that was considered normal!
I got my old piece of crap working, I used a toothbrush on the ram gold bits and inside the slots and it's been working like new.
I think I'd rather the germans made computers and that they lasted for 20 years like their cars do.
I'm glad you could get such cheap ram. That's very cheap. I have a computer shop near me that preys on people's ignorance and the fact that they want their computer to last for more than a couple of years and they'd probably want $100 for that ram.
First I got a replacement heat-sink and fan for the Landmark because I broke one of the connecting pins trying to paste in back in, he charged me $10 for the S/H spare, which was actually a better one than came with the Landmark. But that wasn't working and I started to think something else was wrong. and I took the box to him. He charged me $40 for the time it took to test components. He doesn't do gaming stuff so sent me to Centre Com, at least they were $20 cheaper than Landmark for the GPU. He only had a single 1 GB DDR, no 512 MB DDR, but he did have the two 256 MB DDR 400 mhz. He says he tosses some of the old components out now and again, but he'll sell them cheap if anybody wants them.
Well the Germans don't tend to believe in cutting corners. A quarter of my ancestry is Swiss-Italian from Como, so I can understand the mentality.
How hot your box gets can also depends on the power supply and how over taxed it is. The Landmark currently has 500 watts psu, after the original 450 watts psu packed up a couple of years ago. The old 9800 GT had a minimum psu requirement of 400 watts, but the GT640 has gone backwards and has minimum requirement of 350 watts but with twice the benchmark. So with my psu running more lightly it's a lot cooler. I wonder if the old GPU will run if I replace the caps? The current standard for a gaming psu is 650 watts and that's what is required for the more powerful cards.
My advice on a new gaming machine, will be good psu and good aftermarket cooling for the GPU.
The next trick of our glorious banks will be to charge us a fee for using net bank!!! You are no longer customer, you are property!!!

Yup. I ran my old Pentium 4 at 80 degrees at times. It didn't like it much, though.
It constantly amazes me how resilient the latest batch of processors are. I have (inadvertantly) run my core i7 at 100 degrees for some time with no ill effects. (The power to the water pump got disconnected.) In the old days that would have been the end of the processor for sure. At the very least it would have crashed very fast.
The toothbrush technique can do wonders. I generally use a rubber. (for any Yanks on the thread: read eraser. Although come to think of it a condom might work too.)

Oh that's right I used a rubber on the actual ram and a toothbrush for the slots.
I still have my p4, lying around. It'd make a perfectly good cpu for anything but the latest games. We talk about food waste, I reckon IT hardware waste would be shocking. But we have to keep the bulls happy and fucked, overpopulated countries in jobs and chuck it all away like it's just everyday garbage.
stinkbug omosessuale Frank Castle is a liar and a criminal. He will often deliberately take people out of context and use straw man arguments. Frank finally and unintentionally gives it up and admits he got where he is, primarily via dumb luck! See here Property will be 50-70% off by 2016.

Needs more gold!

Gay New World more like.

Count,
I did a little research, and I reckon you'll do OK with Rome II TW with an Nvidia GTX650Ti-based card. My GTX570 eats Shogun II for breakfast at 2650x1600 and the GTX650Ti is only about 10% slower than a GTX570 - and it has a TDP of 104 Watts instead of 219W for the 570.
I've never used aftermarket cooling for GPUs. Don't reckon you should have to if you don't overclock. the 570 has run pretty hot in summer though - 93 degrees plus. But then the fan doesn't kick into high gear until 93 degrees.

The gtx650ti is a $160 card compared to $95 for the gt640oc. Which would be nice because the TI is a more powerful card.
But, don't forget the motherboard and cpu and for that matter the RAM are a little yesteryear. I assume you got 1155 socket rather than my 775. These are going to limit the gains of the progressively faster cards.
At the moment the GPU is on 27 C. If I do Shogun 2 on full resolution I think I can get 50 C.
I've been more preoccupied with the Prescott CPU era computer. I bought another Prescott era box for $20 and that got me a 40 GB hard drive to use for a boot. My old 200 GB HDD has some bad sectors on the first 55 GB that make it difficult to boot from. If I stick to using the latter part of the disk then it works.
I installed Debian Linux which is a real loser as a general GUI OS. I still struggling to install an Unbuntu derivative called "lunbuntu" which shows more promise.
