The thing is I don't know exactly what is going to be useful for me Linux.
The reason for FAT32 is both O/S can use it without any difficulty.
Would I want something more than this?
Would I want Ubuntu 12.10 64bit ext4 on how many gigs of partition?
Would I want that? Note, the question what will be good for me, not what some other thinks is good and holy.
This is why I usually don't recommend using linux, because of annoying problems. This is why although Linux has been around for about 20 years it still has a pissy uptake. Idiots like BP reckon it's the shit. But it isn't, but it may be one day.
Ok, well you've got a 4gb file limit with fat32.
Personally I'd rather risk it using ntfs. It's up to you.
This is from 2009 and the opinion on it's stability seem to be 50-50:
I'd probably give Linux at least 50 gigs. The installer will probably just have default settings for the hard drive setup which should be ok.
So what will happen is the linux partition will be on ext4, your windows will be partitioned to be ntfs, and then you can read and write files from linux over the whole hard drive, but you wouldn't be able to read and write linux files from windows I don't think.
stinkbug omosessuale Frank Castle is a liar and a criminal. He will often deliberately take people out of context and use straw man arguments. Frank finally and unintentionally gives it up and admits he got where he is, primarily via dumb luck! See here Property will be 50-70% off by 2016.

Things don't look too hopeful for Ubuntu or Linux.

Windows 8 PCs will come with Microsoft's UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Secure Boot. This “feature” will make it much harder to boot Linux or other operating systems. Canonical, Ubuntu Linux's parent company, is going to take a new approach to address this problem.
Win 7 is quite a powerful system. But the company behind it however is wishing to control its users. Because the market has ceased expanding they are fighting over what's left. Windows is demonstrating ever more contempt for the user.

And this will create problems where?

Well the claim is you can upgrade from Fat32 to ntfs at your moment of choice.
It's a pity on a planet with 7 billion people, we can't given scenarios which help determine our needs.
Some argue about Artificial Intelligence. The net is proof there is so far, no such thing. Even the naturally intelligent seem to be in difficulty.

Well BP might be right, eventually. Win 7 could be the end of the road for Microsoft.
Doesn't every IT company want to control it's users? Google, Apple, Facebook, they all seem to want you by the balls as well.
I haven't used fat32 since about the year 2000. It could be ok, it could be dodgy. I have no idea what the experience will be like.
This is why I wouldn't recommend linux unless you want to put in a lot of time mucking around, it just ends up complicated and stressful imo. But if you go in with a curious attitude it can be interesting and fun.

You're taking BP's predictions seriously?....................maybe you should lie down and take an aspirin?
As is pointed out, when there was a bad reaction to Vista, the peguin could've taken some market share. But instead it sat around with a carrot up its arse. This history will repeat.

You sugest to go with it?

The suggestion is that it is not dodgy.
The next trick of our glorious banks will be to charge us a fee for using net bank!!! You are no longer customer, you are property!!!

Amazon's biggest selling laptop comes with Linux on it, and Android is based on Linux.
Obviously it will take a huge company like them to do it. Distros run by nerds won't do it.
The only way to not go with it is to not have a smartphone, no tablet, no gmail, lots of stuff.

Strange nerds, all the guides that I sort help with, use very imprecise language.
I kept on choosing the "something else" option. But this led to a scenario where it wouldn't take. Even though guides suggested this was the option for dual boot.
I was hesitant to select the option "install Ubuntu alongside windows". WTF does that mean? Does it give you any indication of which drive it is going to install itself on? Fortunately it installed itself on the partition I had readied for it. It did so as ext4 I think, so the content of the drive can't be read by windows, which I don't consider a useful feature.
I even got confused by the initial download. "Download and burn and optical disk" I had no idea want this meant, I had no experience ripping movie and music files off the net. I tried download the file onto the single disk dive I got. I it told me the initial download was a general download of a file onto the HDD I might have understood. Ambiguous language throughout, something you don't see in pre WW2 scientific catalogs.

Android had a worldwide smartphone market share of 75% during the third quarter of 2012
They moved fast.
As for Windows I'm still trying to figure out why they wrecked a powerful tool like add/remove programs, as well as a host other bizarre.
Okay Ubuntu won't boot up......................"unable to find a medium containing a live file system".............people have asking this question for a long time to which no succinct answer seems forthcoming.

Usually what you I is get an .iso file from Ubuntu, then burn it onto a cd or a dvd.
Then set your bios to boot off the cd, and away you go.
Also with Ubuntu they have two streams, one that's always cutting edge and a more stable version that gets updates for about 5 years, I'd go with the latter one. Yeah it's called LTS. Long term support.
That's the trick with IT, all the jargon takes a long time to get used to and learning isn't very linear imo.
Yeah I'm not a fan of the win 7 control panel, XP was spot on and straight forward. Zero need to change.
"unable to find a medium containing a live file system" - did you change your bios back to boot off the HDD?
Do you know what bios is? You press delete just after you switch on your computer or just after you reset and you go in and configure stuff.

I don't think that's the problem. It bypasses the DVD if there is no disk in it. It comes to a dialogue to choose between windows and ubuntu. Windows loads up fine but not Ubuntu.
You have a logical error in your analysis, I could hardly reset the boot order without knowing what the bios is. Presently I'm running from the DVD, because it won't run from the HDD.
The partition that Ubuntu loaded on simply says "New Volume". This suggest it is missing its little start "partition".
