I drive 50 miles each way to work. I car pool which saves on costs and makes the drive more pleasant. I have a diesel hatchback which is both economical and can swallow the miles with little upkeep. When I was made redundant, I had little choice if I wanted to keep paying the mortgage.
I could move closer to work, and I would get a better, cheaper house. But I would be further from London, and further from job opportunities should anything go wrong where I work now. Plus I'd have to move the kids, and they are settled. (they walk to school Frank). I have considered an investment flat near where I work, which may be the best option long term. I could also change jobs in a few years time, and may do so if the commute starts to get me down.
Not everyone is a soft cock these days Frank.
Your a VW golf man eh newjez?
Frank suffers from little man syndrome. If you really got the unlucky chance to meet him you'd find he is really a soft touch. An armpit stubby short wearer.
You have nothing to add but more irrelevant whining from a softcock.

Well you sort of get my point. When I was a kid I used to ride a single speed bike 8klm each way to school and back. When it rained I caught a bus.
But not today Now it seems you must be dropped to the door in the latest Range Rover Vogue.
There's a very good reason for delivering children to the school gate - they are not at risk of being abducted. Walking the streets alone they are in danger of being snatched, especially in the quieter areas.

Is that right.
Better chance than being involved in a car accident on the way to school?
Are you claiming that generations today are sad sick fucks compared to previous generations as in more abductions now than previous?
And when you say child abduction, you are talking "Bad" ones, not custodial. Figures show that the majority of so called "abductions" are custodial.

It isn't a laughing matter for a mother or father wondering if their child is alive or dead until a body turns up.
Still waiting on numbers to back up your assertion that getting to school under your own steam is dangerous compared to other methods.

You can never eliminate the risk of being hit by a car regardless of transport method. If your child walks or travels by bike to school they are still at risk of being hit by a car — and at risk of being abducted. You can completely eliminate the risk of abduction by delivering them to the school gate. I know you love numbers, Francis — especially when preceeded by a dollar sign — but this is about giving children the basic protection that any caring parent should provide.
ACTUAL numbers show (because you clearly haven't bothered to work it out and have instead fallen for the media hype) that the chances of little johnny being abducted are something like 1 in 30,500.
And the chances of that abduction actually being a "Danial Morcombe " are obviously far less again.
Some interesting odds here, There is a chance of them being involved in a car accident while you are driving them to school as well. Dying in an auto accident -- 1 in 75 (lifetime risk) best not let them venture outside........... Being struck by lightning -- 1 in 10,456 (lifetime) http://www.scottware.com.au/tickets/odds.htm#odds

So the relevance of a car accident is nil because that risk is present in all cases. The risk of abduction is only relevant when they go to school by walking or riding. It can be eliminated completely by delivering them to school. Of course, it's a matter for all of us individually. Personally, I won't take that risk. I don't want a lifetime of regret.
