You have highlighted succinctly why NIMBY's need to be neutered to a large degree.
The Government is responsible for the greater good of society. Though you have every right to express your selfish views ( I once had similar views to an extent regarding my home), your views ought to have no more significance to housing policy compared to the selfish views of the next taxpayer who may not own their own home.
I am a supporter of stifling NIMBY's, even though it is contrary to my own interests, and I can see the damage current policy is causing our society, our economy, the environment, our transportation system, inner city culture and even mental health and well-being.
In my book, if you buy a house within 250m of a train station in inner city Sydney and then complain about medium or high density going in next door - go jump. Move to Newcastle or Darwin if you don't like it.
With a sensible 15 year master-plan that allows for high rise buildings and 4 - 5 story terraces in appropriate locations within Sydney's inner city (near train/tram stattions) - whilst adhering to heritage values - we can hopefully (finally) have an efficient and vibrant city.
Luckily, close to 90% of the inner cities best examples of Victorian, Edwardian, Georgian and WW2 era housing are under heritage protection. I can't agree with you Moops, it is critically important to preserve heritage architecture. Even the Roden Cutler House and UTS tower have value as a statement of work - and I usually hate Brutalism.
Though I think forcing home owners so adhere to strict heritage standards for things such as painting the house (you only have two choices in some council areas) is way too extreme.
Critically important? That's a bit much isn't it?
The more those old terraces go up in value the more I want to destroy those areas. To take the humble worker's terrace and the history that those workers went through, giving us the worker's rights and the almost perfectly egalitarian society we had for a while, to take that and turn them into a casino chip and a place for deranged chardonnay socialists to gather whilst they're for the most part in bed with the tories, the people that those workers fought so hard against. That pisses me off.
I want them fucking nuked, the public service annihilated, and an effective pogrom on the left to get them out of our unis. I think it's far more critically important to house people affordably and with dignity, and for damned sure a freer market is the tried and true way to do that.
stinkbug omosessuale Frank Castle is a liar and a criminal. He will often deliberately take people out of context and use straw man arguments. Frank finally and unintentionally gives it up and admits he got where he is, primarily via dumb luck! See here Property will be 50-70% off by 2016.
The biggest issue. The doubling of our actual deaths and the baby boom (80 years later) turns into a death bust. Our natural growth may fall to zero or perhaps even negative and our NOM would have to double or treble to compensate. As the largest voting bloc will be the aged, it is not likely to happen. Our population growth drops from here on as projected by all solid data sources.
Taxing the over 65's more. 1. GST to 20% and raise welfare and the tax free threshold accordingly to compensate. 2. Land tax to replace stamps and create reverse mortgages from Centrelink for those that are asset rich/cash for to pay. 3. CGT on all property sold under 10 years. Exemptions for real reasons to move – health, babies and work. No CGT after 10 years, ZERO! 4. Death tax on the value over $1million at 25% 5. Asset test the PPOR (value over $750k) for pension eligibility and also provide reverse mortgages exclusively from the govt, to those asset rich/cash poor. It is not fair that pensioners can live in a $5 million dollar home, have $1m in cash and still get a part pension!

That's a relief, I live more than 250m from a train station. Town Hall is probably my closest and it'd be 4km.
I agree, build medium to high density on train and tram corridors.

Dr Kinetoscope, I hadn't noticed your sig, nice.

I wasn't aware about any difficulties you were having with others on the board.
Whether I am a Dr. - or not - remains classified. Are you really blond?
No i'm not being nasty, on the contrary Foxbat was, if you would care to click the link.....
Can we please come back to the question - as you mused earlier, why in your opinion is heritage protection for property silly?
If a property is heritage listed, I certainly wouldn't be interested.
The reality is you're not allowed to put a coat of paint on a wall without it being formally approved . I agree sometimes to what needs to be heritage listed but not being told & dictated to what I can do /can't do to my own property. It would never feel like its your own home..
You can't demolish when it's heritage listed....when in reality for some listings it's the most viable option.
