For those that aren't aware (or care). Real Estate agents and various industry types as of early April, were up in arms at the removal of a purchasers name and address details from Valuer General sales records accessed through such systems as PropertyDATA, RP Data and Pricefinder. The action was taken by the Valuer General / State Government but after successful lobbying by the (key point here) REIV, the purchasers name has been re-introduced on a read only basis.

Now the good folk at RP Data decided to pretend it was them that successfully lobbied for this information to be re-introduced in emails sent out to agents. Amusingly it is not the REIV (who own the data product PropertyDATA) that have set the record straight on this, but one of their competitors Pricefinder. Letter below;

Dear PriceFinder Member,

Important Announcement – Victorian Owner’s Names are Back (Pending Government Approval on 17th May 2012)

Last month the Victorian Valuer General made changes (removal of property owner's names) to the distribution of property sales data in Victoria. However as a result of the direct action taken by the REIV, the Victorian Government has announced a partial roll-back of the restrictions introduced around the provision of owner’s names for Victorian properties.
What do these changes mean for Victorian Real Estate Agents?
1. The names of sellers and buyers are to be reinstated on a read only basis for licensed real estate agents. Read only means view, but not print or download. Please note: The removal of owner’s address will remain.

Confirmation of these changes are expected to be announced by the Victorian Government on Thursday, 17th May 2012 after which PriceFinder will automatically be reinstating access of Owners Names to all Victorian Real Estate Agents.
PriceFinder wishes to take this opportunity to express sincere gratitude to the REIV for spearheading the campaign that ultimately secured the roll-back of owners names in Victoria. A statement that was relayed directly from the Victorian Government who recognised that it was the REIV’s efforts alone that secured this action.

Work in Real Estate but no not employed by Pricefinder (or have any financial interest in the company), but happy to confess a dislike of RP Data!
