i can tolerate a bit of childish name calling but...
homophobia, racism, sexism etc have no place in this forum.
Alex's decision is disappointing but not unexpected. It is the track the world is on - it appears that people from certain chosen groups must be protected from written/verbal statements deemed by others to be insults.
Alex has suspended the man for using the word "faggot". People here throw much worse insults (how about retard?) with free abandon but it appears that such insults are fine and dandy so long as they do not apply to a protected group under the homophobia, racism (to protect the black group but not the white) and sexism (to protect women but not men).
This is a serious issue. Andrew Bolt was found to be guilty of racial vilification merely because he truthfully "wrote they sought professional advantage from the colour of their skin". In many countries it is now punishable by a long jail sentence to state an honestly held view regarding the holocaust. It's horrific that people are now sent to jail, for years, for what they say, write or store on their computer memory.
The law now says "Thou must not insult people belonging to certain groups. Thou are free to insult anyone else - particularly white anglo-saxon heterosexual men."
I don't suppose there's anyway back to the old world where 'Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me'.
Edit add: If words deemed to be homophobic, racist or sexist are to be banned here then I suggest a beginning is made with the id "rastus2". This is what wiki has to say about the word:
Quote:
Rastus is a pejorative term traditionally associated with African Americans in the United States. It is considered offensive.[1]

All minority groups must be protected from mainstream discriminatory crimes. Verbal discrimination can cause stress disorders but in the long term history shows that it leads people down a path that includes physical assault and unfairness in the environment.
I think that the forum rules should include calling someone a "retard", "cripple" or other terms describing a "protected" group which are intended to be derogatory should carry the same "suspension" punishment.
Strindberg
This is a serious issue. Andrew Bolt was found to be guilty of racial vilification merely because he truthfully "wrote they sought professional advantage from the colour of their skin".
There is a big stretch between what themoops said and what Bolt said. Bolt was trying to educate and inform. Themoops was purely using the word in a derogatory manner.

In Austria, the Verbotsgesetz 1947 provided the legal framework for the process of denazification in Austria and suppression of any potential revival of Nazism. In 1992, it was amended to prohibit the denial or gross minimisation of the Holocaust.
Belgium
Holocaust denial was made illegal in Belgium in 1995.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
In May 2007 Ekrem Ajanovic, a Bosniak MP in the Bosnian Parliament proposed a legislation on criminalizing the denial of Holocaust, genocide and crimes against humanity.
Czech Republic
In addition to Holocaust denial, denial of communist perpetrated atrocities is illegal in the Czech Republic.
France
In France, the Gayssot Act, voted for on July 13, 1990, makes it illegal to question the existence of crimes that fall in the category of crimes against humanity as defined in the London Charter of 1945, on the basis of which Nazi leaders were convicted by the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg in 1945-46. When the act was challenged by Robert Faurisson, the Human Rights Committee upheld it as a necessary means to counter possible antisemitism.]
Germany
In Germany, Volksverhetzung ("incitement of the people") is a concept in German criminal law that bans the incitement of hatred against a segment of the population. It often applies in (although is not limited to) trials relating to Holocaust denial in Germany. In addition, Strafgesetzbuch § 86a outlaws various symbols of "unconstitutional organisations", such as the Swastika and the SS runes.
Hungary
The Parliament of Hungary declared the denial or trivialization of the Holocaust a crime punishable by up to three years imprisonment on February 23, 2010.[
Israel
In Israel, a law to criminalize Holocaust denial was passed by the Knesset on July 8, 1986.
Liechtenstein
Although not specifically outlining national socialist crimes, item five of section 283 of Liechtenstein's criminal code prohibits the denial of genocide.
Lithuania
Lithuania prohibits approval and denial of Nazi or Soviet crimes.
Luxembourg
In Luxembourg, Article 457-3 of the Criminal Code, Act of 19 July 1997 outlaws Holocaust denial and denial of other genocides.
The Netherlands
While Holocaust denial is not explicitly illegal in The Netherlands, the courts consider it a form of spreading hatred and therefore an offence.
Poland
In addition to Holocaust denial, the denial of communist crimes is punishable by law in Poland.
Portugal
Although denial of the Holocaust is not expressly illegal in Portugal, Portuguese law prohibits genocide denial.
Romania
In Romania, Emergency Ordinance No. 31 of March 13, 2002 prohibits Holocaust denial. It was ratified on May 6, 2006. The law also prohibits racist, fascist, xenophobic symbols, uniforms and gestures: proliferation of which is punishable with imprisonment from between six months to five years.
Switzerland
Holocaust denial is not expressly illegal in Switzerland, but the denial of genocide and other crimes against humanity is an imprisonable offence.
I watched Philadelphia recently Stringberg - and I was shocked - I'd forgotten what the world used to be like. Whilst people are critical of PC, PC is the reason the world has moved on from those times. We are in a different place, a better place than we were in the 80's.
I have no problem with that.
Whenever you have an argument with someone, there comes a moment where you must ask yourself, whatever your political persuasion, 'am I the Nazi?'

Lol, you just had to throw out the strindberg cheap shot...
Btw, my nick is not rastus, it is rastus2 ... If you can show me evidence that rastus2 is deemed to be highly offensive i will consider changing my nick...
Rastus ♂ Of New Testament origin, where it is a shortened form of the Latin name Erastus (Greek Erastos, from erān ‘to love’). This was the name of the treasurer of Corinth converted to Christianity by St Paul (Romans 16:23).
I find strindberg offensive ... Rearrange the letters and drop a few and you get NERDS which is an insult to many people...

But Strindberg is just "generalising", so he only vaguely intends the offensive nature of his posts on this topic.
