AUSTRALIA could be down to just one car manufacturer within the next few years, former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett has warned, saying local players will continue to struggle against declining productivity and a rising currency.
Mr Kennett is the latest high-profile figure to question the economic value of the billions in subsidies directed at the sector, after local producer Toyota announced 350 job cuts at its Altona factory in south-west Melbourne this week.
As premier of Victoria during the 1990s, Mr Kennett negotiated with Toyota over the expansion of its Altona plant.
But Mr Kennett said the combination of a historically high Australian dollar, the high cost base of local producers, and changing consumer trends had put local manufacturing under pressure.
''We don't have a right as a nation to be a car builder. I can see another two car companies going in the next year to two years,'' Mr Kennett told The Saturday Age.
And so Australia continues its inevitable slide towards becoming a nation of dirt-diggers, hair dressers and fast food employees. The manufacturing industry will be gutted, prime agricultural land that survives coal seam gas mining will be sold off to foreign interests to ensure their own food security while Australia, as a political vassal of the United States, will focus on critical issues like imprisoning intellectual property pirates rather than the nation's future.

God, that was well said.
Until Australia can find its own identity and defend its own people - then we are foresaken.

While Australia isn't really the first nation that comes to mind when most automotive enthusiasts talk about vital, car-producing countries, Ward Auto reports that the nation's Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries is very pleased with the opportunity to turn out top-quality automobiles. At the recent “Cars of Tomorrow” conference in Melbourne, FCAI CEO Ian Chalmers called on ongoing innovation from the nation's auto-producing sector.
As a person who has worked in the auto industry for two decades (and am about to become redundant), I can tell you all from first hand experience that the industry is on life support. And I see no hope of recovery. It is question of when, not if, this industry collapses. :tears:
Common sense is a curse - those who have it need to suffer dealing with those who don't have it.
WHO killed aussie auto industry ... all of you driving japanese or german or other european cars, complaining that the australian cars have issue! yes i am, talking to YOU!

I am sorry to hear that Gossamer.
Not just the car industry, but also your job.
I would really like to see development of hybrid cars in Australia.

I could not agree more.
There is no way Australia should sell it's farming land to any foreign interest... 10/20 year lease I could live with, however some strong caveats that mean it is not automatically simply released without public input.

That's another side effect of high house prices. No one gives a fuck about each other or the country anymore. I certainly don't. I want a crash. Moral hazard.
I respect Dick Smith but what a naive pipe dream buying all those beetroots and expecting Australians to buy them. For those who don't know he failed and I think he's planning on driving them all down in a truck to Manly in NSW and giving them away. Do yourself a favour, get to the beach and get some free beets! :excited:
stinkbug omosessuale Frank Castle is a liar and a criminal. He will often deliberately take people out of context and use straw man arguments. Frank finally and unintentionally gives it up and admits he got where he is, primarily via dumb luck! See here Property will be 50-70% off by 2016.
