Yes I think we will see the profits of Target and Kmart etc do better in these tough times as consumers move away from labels and move to more generic brands.
I personally have been doing this for the last five years.
Generic brands are dangerous for Australia. We don't have the volume to make it a viable business in a differentiated market. Furthermore, we have limited buying power to offer generic brands of quality products.
I hope your underwear isn't causing too much discomfort.
Aldi is capturing share primarily because mid-income suburbanites are tapped out and migrating to where costs are lower.
Of course that's all hearsay.
I've started shopping at Aldi because of a few specific products they carry that seem much better quality and yet cheaper than other supermarkets. In particular one Italian cheese I like to cook with, a brand of fortified wine which is amazing and some soft drinks they sell.
Yes, focusing on consumer staples is much more relevant. Had a good conversation with a strategist a few weeks back who said that Aldi is capturing share primarily because mid-income suburbanites are tapped out and migrating to where costs are lower.
Of course that's all hearsay.
Yes because "normally" ordinary middle australians are happy to pay much more than what they have to for stuff they want.....

That's what they all say. The suburbanites might be happy to pay $2.50 for dish-washing liquid for now, even though the data is showing patterns that they are tightening their belts. Many of them barely have 2 sticks to rub together, despite house prices being ratcheted skywards/
"The pre-Christmas and Boxing Day trade period runs from the final two weeks of November right up to New Year’s Eve – a total of 46 days – and the NRA is forecasting a $46.5 billion bonanza for the period.
NRA CEO Dominique Lamb said consumers were poised to set a spending record in 2016, with a four per cent increase on last year’s figures, even though retail has experienced a slow year.
“After a quiet start to the year, due in large part to the federal election, spending in retail has steadily picked up and we are predicting Australian’s to spend more than a billion dollars a day during the pre-Christmas and Boxing Day trade period,” Ms Lamb said." (bold mine)

Hey, talkin' about Ms Lamb, ya still ain't answered me question as ta how mutton sales are goin' in NZ Tezza? - LOL
Well there you go Jethro. Xmas has nothing to do with day-to-day spending of the suburbanites. A whole swag of other pressures are at work during the festive season.
