Why in tha name of f*** would Oz wanna manufacture shit - When it's obvious so many other nations can do it better 'n cheaper than us?
We actually do manufacture stuff, but in term of traditional car manufacturing or steel fabrication etc not so much. I grew up in a family that had a business manufacturing farm machinery for Rural industries, mainly sugar cane growing, but I don't think there is much left in Australia anymore. Mainly distribution of imported machinery and repairs now.
But we do export. People seem to forget that Cochlear and Blackmores are export success stories in the area of medical and therapeutic goods and services. Wine exports etc, there are many others.
Take risks - if you win you will become wealthy, if you lose you will become wise
When our dollar is high local industries who supply local markets get beaten on price by goods and services from overseas. That reverses when our dollar falls.
Yes, and I asked you to name JUST one domestic product or service, CONSUMED DOMESTICALLY by the LOCAL POPULATION in which that would occur.
Allow me to use manufacturing as an example. Mitsubishi assembles cars in Thailand, the average salary for a Thai worker in a Mitsubishi plant is around $250 per MONTH. Which would mean to compete in auto assembly, on labour alone, the AUD would need to drop to US$0.05.
But that is just manufacturing. Please, by all means give me an example of a domestically produced product or service is currently only competitively disadvantaged by the exchange rate. I'm all ears.

Just one - OK
Peanuts.
Quote:
Australia is one of the few peanut producing countries, if not the only country, where imports are permitted with minimal tariffs. In recent times, Australia has imported 5000 to 8000 tonnes of peanuts each year, mainly from China and Argentina.
Whenever I hear peanuts ('n pumpkin' scones) mentioned, I just can't help but reminisce on tha good ole days of our truly great 'n visionary leaders of yesteryore ...

They don't grow peanuts at "Bethany"

And this would cause house prices in Sydney and Melbourne to rise how?
Because I don't see a lot of peanut farming here in Sydney. Who knows, maybe in Melbourne they grow them on their balconies.

Go on. What can we do better and cheaper than the people who we buy manufactured goods from?
