Here's a novel thought, train every front line police officer in assault rifles and have them armed with the weapon in every patrol car, similar to the U.S. This would mean 100's of officers appropriately equipped and ready to engage and eliminate people who are actively killing in this way.
It's not a novel thought, it's a stupid thought Christopher.
Not every dunkin doughnut loving copper is capable of the physical or mental rigor it takes to make the call to go full rambo. And they shouldn't need to be either, it's not the job. Their meant to be employed primarily to protect people, not snap and mow them down with a sub machine gun.
In case you've had your head up your own arse for the last 6 months (sounds likely) the USA is a terrible terrible example of law enforcement.
I have a friend in the UK who is an armed response officer.
We was shocked when he learned how poorly trained with guns the average Aussie cop is.
But then it is a specialist job in the UK, whereas every Aussie cop carries a gun. I expect the proper armed response teams in Australia are trained to a higher standard.
I don't object to armed police by the way. I would be happier if the UK armed all there officers. There have been some situations where the bobbies have to watch as they have no guns.
Whenever you have an argument with someone, there comes a moment where you must ask yourself, whatever your political persuasion, 'am I the Nazi?'
Deputy Commissioner (Counter Terrorism) reckons she was assigned the role of liaison with the State Crisis Committee (NSW Premiere and senior cabinet Ministers in their bunker at Redfern). SMH News Review p.28 August 20-21
Would love to have been a fly on the wall with that bunch of unprepared hand ringers working out what was the best shit to put in press releases!
It must have dawned on them that the cops who had spent so much time mis-informing Cabinet that they knew what they were doing- didn't have a f***ing clue.
The big question for me is, who assigned Burn to the job of babysitting a bunch of politicians and their media advisors?
Did anyone ever tell the State Crisis Committee that they could call upon the expertise of the military?
Did that Committee ever consider invoking the powers that would allow that to occur?
WHAT WOULD EDDIE DO? MAAAATE! Share a cot with Milton?

I don't object with cops having guns, but arming them to the teeth and expecting them to take out terrorists like some kind of rambo isn't realistic.
Given Deputy Commissioner (Counter Terrorism) Catherine Burn did nothing during the siege (as too Commissioner Scipione) what the hell was the Premiere talking about when he said this?:
"I worked alongside Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn throughout the entire siege. I have nothing but admiration, respect and gratitude for the incredible work she did. That goes for the other police officers involved, all the way up to Commissioner Andrew Scipione.”
Maybe they were helping him fashion some awe inspiring press releases?
"God help us if we face a terrorist with more than a sawn-off shotgun"; Tori Johnson's partner slams police's bungled handling of the Lindt siege
Yep, we need specialist teams that have the authority to deal with the terrorists AND the bungling local coppers.
These cops demand everyone else take responsibility for their actions or omissions, but When push comes to shove, argue that they are so idiotic and stupid, we shouldn't touch them!
On half a million pay packet and argued that all he did was waste the time of the guys at the pointy end by asking what they needed in the future to do the job they are doing today.
Scipione should have pissed off down to Dick Smith's and picked up some walkie talkies.
Probably for the best these clowns were tucked up in bed when the shit hit the fan!
"Published on Apr 22, 2013Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn talking about Exercise Baryon which was conducted at ANSTO at Lucas Heights on Sunday. Deputy Commissioner Burn outlines the objectives of the exercise and the plans and arrangements in place to respond to an incident at Lucas Heights and other areas. For more information on counter-terrorism arrangements in NSW go to www.secure.nsw.gov.au"
I know that it is not very sexy sounding, but it would help if it was called the "State Anti-Terrorism Plan", or perhaps just the "State Response to Terrorism Plan".
It's a bit of a joke all these wokkas running around flaunting the "Counter Terrorist" tittle when they clearly don't understand what it means.
If they could get over that 101 hurdle, they might start being able to do their jobs.
At the moment they are just a bunch of dimwits worried about patch-protection.
Opinion piece in today's Daily Telegraph says. After noting use of dodgy, irrevocable equipment by the police Katherine McGregor noted: "....We now know the team was disoriented by their own stun grenades during the breach. Had they not rehearsed this with live ammunition routinely in recent months?. It is to late to draw comfort from the fact that our military maintains two highly capable Tactical Assault Groups, at a high state of readiness , in Sydney and Perth. These teams are highly trained, superbly equipped and conduct routine live firing rehearsals for vastly more complex operations than this (Lindt Cafe siege). Such is the pitch at which they operate that they are retained only on standby for strictly limited periods... Sustaining a standing capability, primed to the pitch that the special forces maintain, is clearly beyond even the most competent police service. And we clearly don't have that".
p.22 Daily a telegraph.
Ouch!
Let's hope nsw police and their political masters are dis-abused of the thought they can handle situations like this.
