Would you top yourself to avoid cutting into your family's inheritance?; I've known a bird with a big time health issue overseas who was considering it

Well in truth she was considering rejecting medical treatment for face cancer as funding same would require selling the family home. (And the chance of it being successful was only about 50/50 as I recall?) Plus she also reckoned she'd probably be pretty ugly once the docs peeled her face off 'n cut out all the rotten bits then stitched it back on - So her old man just mightn't like her anymore - So sure; As usual in the big bad world of life, issues aren't always just totally clean 'cut' 'n uncomplicated ... :)

But anyway though, it's interesting the extent some people from somewhat less than blessed backgrounds will consider going to to keep their families chugging along financially OK if/should a bit of misfortune potentially strike them personally along the way hey?

PS: The chick was late 30's maybe? So we're not talking a geriatric here.

Yes, that's not bit different than suicide. I think it depends at what stage your family are at. If mine were dependant, then I would never risk their security. That's part of the reason I'm not back in oz. If I change jobs I lose my life insurance.

She is not in a place where she could make that decision from a safe place. She will be in shock and she will also be grieving her own lost health/beauty. It is sad that our health system could not cover the treatment for a young woman like that. I would certainly donate to a fundraiser.

I really hope people are supporting her through this and helping her to avoid any major decisions at all until she is through this. At my grand old age I would put health before money any day of the week. Her heirs can have fun making their own money, they will never enjoy a penny of money that cost them her life.
Definition of a doom and gloomer from 1993
The last camp is made up of the doom-and-gloomers. Their slogan is "it's the end of the world as we know it". Right now they are convinced that debt is the evil responsible for all our economic woes and must be eliminated at all cost. Many doom-and-gloomers believe that unprecedented debt levels mean that we are on the precipice of a worse crisis than the Great Depression. The doom-and-gloomers hang on the latest series of negative economic data.

This is a very delicate subject.

But i will ask the question.

Will the "medical" intervention work??

I know the doctors bank account will work 100%.

Maybe the doctor could be paid on a success basis.

Very sad.

Good luck.

Peter

I know someone that is 88 years old, her family is seriously considering spending $600,000 to secure a place in a retirement village.??

The poor old lady does not know what day of the week it is.

I am not sure that is ethical.

If she is 30's she could have young children. If medicare wouldn't cover it, I'd be guessing 50/50 would be optimistic. 50/50 surgery survival maybe, but it would depend on possible life expectancy after the surgery. The risk is she'd leave her hubby and kids with no security. I don't think you would do this if there was a reasonable chance.

Well, full credit to her hubbie - He wanted her to flog the joint and didn't reckon he'd give a rats what she looked like.

But he was a Westerner (a Brit specifically ... :) ) who'd never actually been through the really hard sorts of times that she had. So they just had some rather fundamentally different perspectives to come at things from I guess?

How did it end up? No idea - We lost contact without me hearing.

Was it a skin cancer?
Or did it affect a certain facial region?

Body image is a tough one & we all look at ones face, when we see someone ...& if she's been quite pretty, it will be be harder to accept that people are going to be noticing her ...for different reasons this time, it can destroy ones ego.

But the crunch is this..

Do I vAlue my life or the $ ?

Crap happens in different ways.

Newjerk? can you try harder than dig up another person's blog. My first promo was with Billabong and my name in English is modified with a T, am Perth born but also lived in Sydney to make my $$
It's Absolutely Fabulous if it includes brilliant locations, & high calibre tenants..what more does one want? Understand the power of the two "P"" or be financially challenged
Even better when there is family who are property mad and one is born in some entitlements.....Understand that beautiful women are the exhibitionists we crave attention, whilst hot blooded men are the voyeurs ... A stunning woman can command and takes pleasure in being noticed. Seems not too many understand what it means to hold and own props and get threatened by those who do.
Banks are considered to be law abiding and & rather boring places yeah not true . A bank balance sheet will show capital is dwarfed by their liabilities this means when a portions of loans is falling its problems for the bank.

It is very difficult to look after an elderly confused parent at home and if they have the money then IMHO they should go for the home. I am not sure they would need that kinda money tho the place must be like a resort.

In that situation I would go for the potential life saving treatment every time, money is far less important and inheritances are not a right.

Australian Property Forum is an economics and finance forum dedicated to discussion of Australian and global real estate markets and macroeconomics, including house prices, housing affordability, and the likelihood of a property crash. Is there an Australian housing bubble? Will house prices crash, boom or stagnate? Is the Australian property market a pyramid scheme or Ponzi scheme? Can house prices really rise forever? These are the questions we address on Australian Property Forum, the premier real estate site for property bears, bulls, investors, and speculators. Members may also discuss matters related to finance, modern monetary theory (MMT), debt deflation, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin Ethereum and Ripple, property investing, landlords, tenants, debt consolidation, reverse home equity loans, the housing shortage, negative gearing, capital gains tax, land tax and macro prudential regulation.
