One of our somewhat slightly honest PMs, who when asked if he would lie to the Australian people replied "Yes; If he deemed it to be in the national interest" - So I'm told by an old dude who was taking a bit more of an active interest in politics than me back then.

If it wasn't for the single mothers' benefit, I'd actually not have a criticism of Whitlam.
But when great men make fuckups, they make appallingly HUGE ones perhaps?
His no fault divorce legislation has led to a society of single parent families. This creates a society who come from broken homes and are dependant on welfare all of their lives.
Common sense is a curse - those who have it need to suffer dealing with those who don't have it.

Unintended consequences I imagine. But yep, all that side of his Socialist Humanitarian agenda really DOES need to be analysed in the light of its now known practical outcomes before 'we' continue just ploughing on saying doing such stuff 'should' always give rise to 'good' outcomes - IMO.
"Live 'n learn" as they say - Hopefully anyway ...

Oh sure. Because "fault-based" divorce was working so well prior to that: extra legal cost, extra shame, or just preserve the facade and have affairs instead.

If you take an 'extreme' position either way, you shouldn't be too surprised to be proven extremely wrong just maybe?
But anyway, fine - Just don't bitch to me when those who still do have strong family structures munch you when it comes to buying a home and/or other assets for them and theirs ...

Would most property investors not be Lathamesque aspirational labor types educated because a socialist Witlam government gave them free education, and all they can do to repay the nation is to emulate English aristocracy by becoming petty landlords?

Anyway, whatever ... RIP Gough.
Single mothers benefits existed since just after WW1 Herbie.
All Whitlam did was to reverse the illegal Church inspired policy of hiding that fact.

Sounds a bit like Kevin
In Kevin's defence he did have a lot on his plate though.

This post is a disgusting and childish factional attempt to link Rudd with greatness.
