Peter The younger generations are not expecting an inheritance. They encourage the boomers to live it up and spend it all i general. The sperm lottery is hardly a equitable system anyway and I have no problem with that. The younger generations will have paid Super all their working lives and will not require the same fiscal support that the boomers will.
The narrow view that it may punish some individuals is to totally ignore that it will benefit the taxpayers as a whole.
The policy is not to advantage me, it is to save the taxpayers from supporting boomers who retire as millionaires and who will get a full or part pension. Retireees who may have to use the equity in their home to suppliment their income is hardly suffering.
I know it will be hard, but put aside the value of the family home for a minute and assume no policy change in that area...
You bang on that retirees (couples) can receive a full pension with assets of $286.5k and cuts out completely at $1.145m. What would you propose? A tiered system, or a flat out cut out system? What amounts?

Zaph The PPOR value over $500k (VG amounts) would be included in the pension asset test. Simple as that.
Equitable or not, it is a natural and normal system - An inherent part of human nature.
And it is Socialists' never ending failure to recognise that their systems are fundamentally at odds with human nature, Socialists' insistence on fighting against human nature, 'changing' human nature even??? , as opposed to accepting it and attempting to work with it, that mean Socialist systems are fundamentally and inherently doomed to failure.
A Professional Demographer to an amateur demographer:"negative natural increase will never outweigh the positive net migration"
Zaph You can not put the PPOR aside. The system is currently tiered for the amounts you outline. The pension reduces depending on the assets outside of the PPOR.

Herbs So once again you fail to realise we live in a socialist democracy now. Police, education, health systems provided by the govt for the people is socialist. Your simplistic view of the matter is a problem to you, not me.

You are the one is actively lobbying for change; Not me. So insofar as either of us has 'a problem', it would seem it is you; Not me.

Our current gov provided systems re police, education and health care aren't great pretty obviously. Still, I'd call them tolerably OK. But insofar as it has come up, our health and aged care systems (including aged pension payments) could be improved by ceasing to have them actively discriminate against those who've work and contributed and been somewhat successful because of it.
You Socialists have had things just a bit too much your way for a bit too long IMO. With the result that you have REALLY started getting the bit between your teeth with your entitlement mentality now - Time to put you lot back in your box.

+1000 - well said!
For Aussie property bears, "denial", is not just a long river in North Africa.....

Really? I do believe there were police forces, hospitals and schools set up by governments long before there were any socialist governments.
Socialism is about nationalizing the factors of production. It has nothing to do with governments taxing and providing services, which can happen under any system of govt from feudalism to fascism to monarchy to parliamentary democracy to socialist dictatorship.

Yes MIW, you are quite correct, however we do have social support and the NBN would be arguable as a social ideal. There are many state run enterprises in Oz.
