I don't know where you work but if I'm told something is needed "by" Friday then that means if it's not completed or available before 9am Friday then it wasn't done on time. If it's to be done by COB Friday then that is usually specified. I agree the term can be stretched somewhat but when you're talking about years vs days I don't think it's applicable. If I say I'm going to do something by 2015 it means on the 1st on Jan 2015 it's either done or I've failed. Most people would agree on that.
I agree with this but do recognise some ambiguity so think that it is reasonable that the person who said it is able to clarify.

So even you believe 'by Friday' includes at least nine hours of the Friday itself?

I disagree. If you order something online and they say that will deliver by Friday do you think that means no later than Thursday?
If you say you're going to do something by the time you're 50, then you have until your 50th birthday to do it - i.e. the end of your 50th year.
2015 lasts for an entire year, therefore 'by 2015' allows up to the 31st December 2015 - i.e. the end of the year.

I agree with the delivery example but not with the birthday one. The delivery example is assumed as COB Friday. You said you have until your 50th birthday to do it. Not until your 51st birthday. If your boss says you have to be at work by 9am and you show up at 9:59am then you're going to be sitting down with HR pretty quickly. Also if he says you have to work until 5pm then you can go home at 5pm not 5:59 pm.
Shadow, it's really quite pathetic that the thing you forecast, which bears universally scoffed at, is now looking so likely that nitpicking over the exact timing is the only thing they have got left.
Collecting desperation. Ex-Bp Golly April 2 2015. "I see with a slight overshoot -70% [fall in Sydney house prices] as being well within possibility"

Hmmm, slivers like a snake......

I'm surprised he has only a 80-90% success rate with such vague and poorly defined predictions.
I cant wait to watch Shady sliver over the world 'approach'
we will soon find out it can be interpreted in all sorts of interesting ways.

I know... it's funny how the bears who were predicting a 40% crash (from 2008 levels) have resorted to quibbling over the meaning of the word 'by' now that the $1 million median is in sight. Sore losers.

'by 2015' is a distinctly fixed point in time
ie by 23:59:59 31st Dec 2014.
How can 'by 2015' be the same as 'by 31 Dec 2014'
Following that logic, 'by 31 Dec 2014' must be the same as 'by 30 Dec 2014' which is the same as 'by 29 Dec 2014' and so on.

You've just ended up in an infinite loop.
Try again.
I accept that this is beyond you Shady.
And I was just kidding about being interested in your own special shady definition of the word 'approaching'.
I really am not that interested.
