Not decide ya gunna keep bludging for a bit longer by bleeding assets/wealth from them what's bin both a bit productive 'n a bit frugal in the past; 'N consequently saved a bit.
And in the process of continuing ya bludging, discouraging them what just might have otherwise bin a bit tempted to become a bit productive in the future - By informing 'em it's pointless to do so - Because if they do, you'll just bleed any assets/wealth/savings orrf them too - Because that's how your lot operates - Because ya reckon it's 'fair'.
PS: Was yakking with me olds this arvo - Death Tax came up; The old man remembers it. Reckons 'The Valuer' would rock up at a person's joint after they croaked - Assign a value to all their crap (including the knives 'n forks 'n spoons in the cutlery drawer if you got a tough one); 'N then you got taxed on it. (Plus they'd quite probably pinch some of the dearly recently departed's crap as they were rifling thru it because that's just the sorts of pieces of crap that they were.)
So back ta me original point - Ya need ta increase productivity Pork.
Herbs Improving the diminishing pool of workers productivity will be difficult task with our high casualisation of our workforce. In many cases increasing productivity means less staff, like our automatic checkout chicks these days.
After reading the studies I am still amazed that Ageing is seen as only one issue, rather than the two distinct issues it it actually is. 1. the boomer bulge moving into old age and the fiscal challenges they represent as 80% of the 5.2 million boomers will require full or part pensions 2. increased lonjevity which is here to stay and a much longer term issue.
The solutions lie in increasing the GST, land taxes, reverse mortgage for pensioners who lose part of their pension as the $500k VG amount to be included in the asset test for pensions, getting rid of stamps and creating carrots so we do not end up with 30% of all our homes as lone occupants etc....
On the issue of death tax, basically I am not sure the sperm lottery is affair way for the distribution of wealth, however ongoing businesses and rural would need to be exempt and perhaps a tax only on the value of an estate over $1million.
I do not think the aged are bluging at all as many are now forced to remain in work longer just to try and provide for themselves in retirment.
... I am not sure the sperm lottery is affair way for the distribution of wealth ...
No guarantees one is gunna choose ta leave their loot to 'their sperm' - A sane person would presumably be evaluating/passing judgement on whether 'their sperm' is worth leaving their loot to.
But given it's THEIR loot acquired over THEIR lifetime (with that being THEIR lifetime of paying tax) my personal thought is that they should get to leave any such lifetime after tax assets 'n savings of theirs to whomsoever they should choose; Without the gov just getting ta pop it's hand up 'n say HA HA - YA GOTTA GIVE US LOTS. (eff those bludgers)
A Professional Demographer to an amateur demographer:"negative natural increase will never outweigh the positive net migration"

Everyone loves a tax that they think won't affect them negatively and just might have a spin off benefit for them.
Pauks folks have already passed on so it's too late to tax his inheritance, but he will share in the benefits of taxing everyone else's inheritance.
Any expressed market opinion is my own and is not to be taken as financial advice

Peter As you know, i will never get an inheritance as I have explained before as my family has a Trust in Perpetuity that will outlast my lifetime. As a man involved in property, I can understand why you think others only think about themselves, however some do not.

Now, back to your pig pen....
Come on Paul, you have told us before that you received an inheritance, with which you bought a house.
Don't try to rewrite history.

Peter Nope, never got and will never get any inheritance. Not sure where you thought I said I did, as I have not. Perhaps you could find the quote from me to support your claim, or perhaps not.
Anyway, my point was that some will want change that may effect them personally in a negative way. I know a few. I have read such comments here as well.

Oh drop dead, Pauk.
If you think estate taxes are a good idea, then propose to impose them, full stop, and justify why.
Don't then immediately allow special pleading exemptions for your favourite constituencies. Why should the "sperm lottery winner" offspring of farmers and fast-food franchisees be any more privileged than the rest?

Simples... When we did have death taxes before the burden was felt most by rural communities who would often have to 'sell the farm' to pay the death tax. The same applies for ongoing business concerns as both rural and business are actually good for our GDP, we would not want to 'force' people to sell these income producing assets.
Also by excluding business, it might encourage investment into productive works, rather than speculation on non-productive assets like housing.
