There are a lot of myths surrounding the wars between Scotland and England.

The reality is very simple. People living in serfdom didn't give a rats arse about who was king of what and where.

They were persecuted equally whether they were Irish, Scottish or English.

They went to war when they were told to and they changed religion when they were told to. If they disobeyed, they were burned, hanged, buried alive or stuck in cages to be pecked to death by crows.

Meanwhile, anyone who thinks that Scotland is a servant of England has obviously not heard of James I (and latterly Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Not to mention David Cameron).
Scottish separatism? I blame that dreadful Braveheart film

Stanley Baxter, the veteran comic, said the Mel Gibson film aided the cause of independence

Stanley Baxter, the veteran comedian, has blamed the Mel Gibson film Braveheart for a rise in support for Scottish independence.

The comic actor and impressionist, 88, best known for his 1970s television series The Stanley Baxter Picture Show, said he had encountered considerable anti-English sentiment among Scots north of the Border, but never anti-Scots sentiment to the south.

“They don’t know any better,” said the former child star. “It’s got to do with these dreadful films they’ve made, anti-English films and that wretched Australian [Mel Gibson] – Braveheart – it’s not even correct historically.”

However, Baxter, who left his native Scotland in 1959, told Radio Times he believed his compatriots would vote “no” to independence, saying: “They’re canny, the Scots.”

Baxter began his career as a child actor on BBC Scotland and has recorded a reimagining of Robert Burns’s poem Tam O’ Shanter for Radio 4. He said: “I’m very happy in London. South of the Border’s been very good to me.

“I could never have achieved that success north of the Border if I’d stuck there. It wouldn’t have happened.” Simon Schama, the television historian, who has previously spoken out against the break-up of the Union, told the magazine that Scottish independence was Britain’s version of the drift towards the “horrible” break-up of the nation state around the world.

He said the same forces behind calls for Scottish independence were “happening in dreadful places, causing ethnic and tribal wars, immense massacres”.

Schama, who recently enjoyed success with BBC Two documentary series The Story Of The Jews, also said Britain was becoming more religious. “My generation grew up thinking that religion was completely marginal to British life, which, as for the rest of the world, has been proved more and more wrong.

“We were arrogantly isolated from that, thinking religion was just an ornamental part of Britishness,” he said.

“Now look at the success of the Alpha Evangelicals, how important Christianity has been to the community of West Indians, the huge place of Islam. Britain is becoming a more religious place, not less.”

An independant Scotland would survive well despite the bombardments which hopefully are coming from 'furreners' ! Every true Scot who has looked at this very carefully will decide that heritage will win over greed. Scotland survived before the union and the downfall came when a group of financial wizards sent those ships to Panama and when it failed the country went into a spiral of debt. Then in order to re-coup their losses the rascals sold their soul to England. Think with pride next month.

More like they were held to ransom to sign up the Union following the Darrien.

I would like to see the Scots vote yes, but I fear not.

London doesn't want them separated.

The Tories will be in forever without the Scots. Sure they are trying?

I realise that there are actually more polar bears in Scotland than there are Tory MP's but nevertheless London says NO.

The full force of Nato shall come down on Scotland! How do we know they aren't Russians? They both drink a lot and have churlish manners!
