I have been doing the same job since graduating, working in Architecture, my job is i think safe and we have decent work load And some big clients. 40 yrs old now, no pay rise in 3 years though and like most sectors seem to be working harder.
Was thinking of something totally different, renting land And growing avocados as their are $3-4 each!! Or soy, walnuts To export to china. A micro brewery? Although I will Probably end up in rehab.. Any stories on here of professional People made a change? Are you happier Etc?

I shifted to I.T contacting in finance last year as the best hedge against a dysfunctional economy.
I imagine the job market landscape will look significantly different in a few years time. A lot of sectors will be suffering from stagnant/declining wages as the current mess/economy unwinds/rebalances.
"It were not best that we should all think alike; it is difference of opinion that makes horse races." - Mark Twain on why he avoids discussing house prices over at MacroBusiness. "Buy land, they're not making any more of it." - Georgist Land Tax proponent Mark Twain laughing in his grave at humourless idiots like skamy that continually use this quip to justify housing bubbles.

Not sure that some of your ideas are likely to be profitable, but if you have done your research well then at some point in your life you have to back yourself and accept the kudos if you succeed, or take the kick in the rear end if you fail.
Otherwise your just a drone. Nothing wrong with being a drone though, it's what most people are.

Sounds like a smart move John. Peter I haven't done any research, but would love to Come up with something and have the guts to follow It through, suppose it would take something like me being Made redundant for the push I need. I just found this place

I don't think my family would fancy moving to somewhere with one store!! There would need to be a Westfield close by or my wife won't survive lol!!
You will find that your wife will be more resilient than you think.
It's important that you believe 100% in yourself because if you don't how can you expect your family and financial backers to believe in you.
BTW you can't buy an avocado farm with a 10% deposit. It's a farm not a house and farms normally need a 50% deposit. Maybe a bank will do the loan as a home loan, that sometimes happens although they are not supposed to, but even so you will need 20% minimum deposit.
There will be some machinery, is that part of the price or is it extra? When is the next crop due? Are there marketing arrangements in place? What is the age and condition of the trees and how is the crop looking for this summer? Crops don't grow themselves, what do you know about insecticides etc? What do you know about packaging and marketing?
Being a farmer offers a fantastic lifestyle but there are challenges.

I am a professional that chucked it in a few years ago. I now run my own business which is effectively a consultancy doing the same profession but mostly in 2 niche areas that are in high demand. It has been the best (work) thing I've ever done. I now have great flexibility, pick my clients and am earning around double what I was when I was part of another business.
I had 10+ years in my profession and got the timing right. Also I was in a position that it could have failed and I would have still been ok.
I looked at doing something different to my profession and even launched a test business. It was a good concept and I was generating interest but the effort v reward for doing something outside the area I had spent time training and working in didn't add up. To took less effort to make a go of something I had a background in.
Australian Property Forum is an economics and finance forum dedicated to discussion of Australian and global real estate markets and macroeconomics, including house prices, housing affordability, and the likelihood of a property crash. These are the questions we address on Australian Property Forum, the premier real estate site for property bears, bulls, investors, and speculators. Members may also discuss matters related to finance, modern monetary theory (MMT), debt deflation, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin Ethereum and Ripple, property investing, landlords, tenants, debt consolidation, reverse home equity loans, the housing shortage, negative gearing, capital gains tax, land tax and macro prudential regulation.
