as usual he cherry picked it and neglected to mention he was using full time wages only. which is stupid because it's household income that pays for housing, so if mum and dad both work and mum's wage went up (casual) and dad's went down (full time), but over all they are earning MORE. this means WA is still better off.
Ok, But who would work in nominal terms and why if they did?? Western Australia is quietening a little. All those Forge guys where on big money. I heard the executives got generous bonuses just a few months before the balloon went up. Workers are now left unpaid. Poor form. 1,450 homes with no money to pay the mortgage?? That is a big hit from just one little mining service provider. Peter
You make the assumption that : 1) every mine worker was buying a house 2) there was only one mine worker/house 3) that the partner of the mine worker didn't have a job.

Hmmmm, Not really the main point is that the mining job is usually much higher paying then the average. So even if the spouse was working, it on average would not equal the mining job and homes are bought on 2 incomes so the loss of 1 being the highest income is enough to tip them over. If the person was renting then you have in investor with no rent. Look at it as you wish 1,450 high paying jobs vanished in a heart beat. Peter
Do all calculations on household income assume now that both husband and wife are working fulltime? That if the wife for example isn't working fulltime, or only parttime, then you won't be able to afford a mortgage?

maybe in the first 3 or 4 years, after that it's cheaper than renting.

Even f the partner was working, these days they're usually working because they need the money to pay the mortgage so if one loses their job they're fucked anyway

Very true. Best to stay renting and have your wife stay at home and have babies.

my wife doesn't work and I don't need the money.

You're right Frank. Every worker could have been buying several houses couldn't they.
Whenever you have an argument with someone, there comes a moment where you must ask yourself, whatever your political persuasion, 'am I the Nazi?'
Australian Property Forum is an economics and finance forum dedicated to discussion of Australian and global real estate markets and macroeconomics, including house prices, housing affordability, and the likelihood of a property crash. Is there an Australian housing bubble? Will house prices crash, boom or stagnate? Is the Australian property market a pyramid scheme or Ponzi scheme? Can house prices really rise forever? Members may also discuss matters related to finance, modern monetary theory (MMT), debt deflation, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin Ethereum and Ripple, property investing, landlords, tenants, debt consolidation, reverse home equity loans, the housing shortage, negative gearing, capital gains tax, land tax and macro prudential regulation.
