China's deadly game of 'chicken'

Posted Image

US and Chinese warships have engaged in a dangerous game of "chicken" as tensions continue to run hot over exactly who owns the East and South China seas.

It's been revealed the captain of the US missile cruiser USS Cowpens was forced to issue an "all stop" command to the ship's engine room in a desperate bid to avoid a collision.

The incident, which happened about a week ago, occurred as the US warship "shadowed" China's new aircraft carrier Liaoning as it underwent testing in the South China Sea.

America recognises the area as international waters.

China claims it as its own.

The Chinese naval vessel had crossed directly in front of the USS Cowpens and halted, according to naval officers and defence officials.

"It is unusual to have to take evasive action at sea to avoid a collision," the official said.

The Chinese have vastly underestimated who they are dealing with. This style of war the Americans actually are good at.

The Commie party is on it's last legs, lose this at it loses everything.

Do you think America would be happy if Chinese warships started shadowing America's latest warship a couple hundred kilometres off the American coastline?

Zero is coming...

Yes it is a bit of poor form.

:pop:
I think America should bow out gracefully, Asia should be friends not adversaries.
American action may galvanize Russia, China and other disaffected countries.
Not a great plan.
Rome eventually fell.
But could explain why rich Chinese are buying in Australia.

The problem is the Spratly's are claimed by Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei. All of which are US allies or more friendly to the US than they are with Red China.

The US is shelving its "clear and present danger" with Iran for the Interim.

The UK is in the process of building two air craft carriers - one of which will be moth balled immediately. (You couldn't make it up)

Rather than moth ball it - why not sell it to china? Surely they would love a new carrier. Or even the states if they want to out bid china?

Surely this makes more sense than just scrapping a brand new ship?

Not entirely true
They dont claim it in its entirety, just the bits that are in their territorial waters and Brunei doesnt claim any of the Islands

VIETNAM UNCOVERS NEW EVIDENCE THAT ISLANDS DO NOT BELONG TO CHINA

A Han-Chinese map of China published by Shanghai Publishing House in 1904 reveals that China stretched as far south as Hainan Island, and that Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands did not belong to China.

In 1974, taking advantage of the withdrawal of the American troops from the Vietnam War, China invaded the Paracel Islands. A brief but bloody naval battle with the forces of the then US-backed Republic of Vietnam ensued.

Vietnam’s behemoth northern neighbor has illegally occupied the islands ever since. But a post-1975 united Vietnam has never relinquished its ownership of the Paracel Islands and continues to keep military bases and other facilities on the Spratly Islands.

In 2009, Vietnam appointed a Da Nang official as Hoang Sa mayor in a largely symbolic move to assert sovereignty over the archipelago.

joke....

The larger and less maneuverable vessel has right of way.

This is a classic case of the party in the weaker negotiating position stopping anything from getting set in stone while their position gets strengthened. It will play out over decades, not months unless someone fucks up badly.
