Negative gearers lined their pockets with 100B in subsidies in the same time frame.
Miners lined their pockets with 50B in fuel subsidies originally intended for farmers in the same time period.
This industry was a skills nursery and the flow on effect will far exceed what the Libtards expect.

Check out this little right wing think tanks hit list. Check off Number 30.

what crap. the fuel REBATE, not subsidy, is a refund on the fuel excise they were charging non road users when the excise is supposed to be going towards national road schemes.

if you are so pissed off at people claiming their allowed tax deductions, why don't you just give all your money to the government this tax season. don't ask for anything back at all.

oh thats right, it's OTHER PEOPLES MONEY you are happy to spend.

OK, we shall see. Still think it's a sad day for Australia and further hollowing out of the economy so when mining goes bust we will have zip to fall back on. Just wanted to make a counterpoint because it seems most here begrudge the piddling assistance this industry was recieving while ignoring other industries which recieve much more government assistance.
We don't have zip to fall back on, we have whole armies of construction tradies, if only people were encouraged to build more houses (rather than buy old ones), we would be set.

The problem with that is that the tradies are addicted to the high wages that the mining boom brought and the Governments are addicted to the high amounts of revenue they get from the transactions on houses. Both of these cause new builds to be far more expensive than they need to be.

Also, the sad day was when we decided to end manufacturing in Australia and put all our eggs into mining.

The global outsourcing trend has done more damage to local communities than the failure of a single factory operator ever will.

people keep saying this like it's a fact. but it's wrong.

our gdp is 10% mining, 12% manufacturing, 30% services, 12% argi... the list goes on.

clearly our eggs aren't all in mining.

The critical question is the value in exports. Comparisons to GDP can be misleading. Because the external trade dollar and the internal trade dollar are two different animals. Is floor sweeper in Aus better than a floor in China? Yes but only because the Aus floor sweeper will have better equipment and a car to move them and their equipment between jobs. But it is only marginal in real terms.

Is a Chinese pack of cigarettes at $3 but worse than than an Aus pack of cigarettes at $20? Is yumcha at $2 in China worse than yumcha in Aus a $15?

A high GDP is partially an illusion created by a high dollar when the capital cost of internal trade is mostly internal. For that matter China has a deliberate policy of keeping the Yuan low.

In 2010 Aus export was worth 221 billion, of that the export of raw materials was worth 161 billion. The export of rural products was worth 28 billion. Manufactures about 31 billion. Other about 12 billion. The true trade figure might be less because some trade will be reciprocal.

If exports fell dramatically Australia's GDP measured in international dollars would implode.

The current year export of raw materials in shaping up at around 180 billion.

We are a banana republic.

Australian Property Forum is an economics and finance forum dedicated to discussion of Australian and global real estate markets and macroeconomics, including house prices, housing affordability, and the likelihood of a property crash. Is there an Australian housing bubble? Will house prices crash, boom or stagnate? Is the Australian property market a pyramid scheme or Ponzi scheme? Can house prices really rise forever? These are the questions we address on Australian Property Forum, the premier real estate site for property bears, bulls, investors, and speculators. Members may also discuss matters related to finance, modern monetary theory (MMT), debt deflation, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin Ethereum and Ripple, property investing, landlords, tenants, debt consolidation, reverse home equity loans, the housing shortage, negative gearing, capital gains tax, land tax and macro prudential regulation.

Forum Rules: The main forum may be used to discuss property, politics, economics and finance, precious metals, crypto currency, debt management, generational divides, climate change, sustainability, alternative energy, environmental topics, human rights or social justice issues, and other topics on a case by case basis.
